Roguelike Mode
The first time you load into Swarm, you’ll play through a tutorial. After that, you’ll start your first “run”
- When you start a run, you’ll load into a level with a random map.
- Swing around with your grapples, killing enemies and collecting the “Shards” that enemies drop when killed (purple crystals used as currency)
- Enemies also drop shields and health to keep you in the fight!
- Shards may also appear in clusters on walls, and can be collected by shooting them and then swinging near them.
- Weapons, health, and yellow batteries which charge shields may randomly spawn in.
- Grapple to the weapons to pick them up!
- To complete each level, you must kill 75% of the Swarm (enemies)
- When all the Swarm are defeated, a giant blue portal will appear
- Grapple to the portal to exit the level and move onto the next one
- Point your guns at the portal directly and grapple (grip trigger)
- Between each level there is a Perk upgrade Screen, where you choose from one of three upgrades and are shown your progress. (Perks are non-permanent upgrades, explained in “Roguelike Elements”)
- As you progress and get more perks, you will become stronger.
- You can also “re-roll” for a new set of perks
- While the maps will change, the “biomes” (the theme of each map) will be the same
- Biome 1 (levels 1-6) is “City” themed
- Biome 2 (level 7-11) is “Desert” themed
- Biome 3 (level 12-18) is “Space” themed
- You will always play, in this order:
- 4 combat levels
- 1 Race Level (where you collect shards and try to beat a timer)
- 1 Boss level (boss level is always the same)
- There are many different maps for each level, so no two runs will ever look the same
- Ex Level 1 could be at a beach pier, but the next run you play - level 1 may be an offshore oil rig, but they will be thematically similar.
- A full run of the game consists of playing through all three biomes. Ending with beating the final boss.
- 18 levels in total per run (if you make it all the way to the end)
- Each of these levels except for the boss can be any one of 40+ maps, there are 45 maps in total
- If you die before killing the final boss, you’ll be brought back to the “Start Run” Screen
